Job-hunting is already a challenge. Make it easier by crafting your resume to get noticed and even better – invited for the interview. Follow these guidelines to write a concise and efficient resume. Stand out and get the attention of recruiters and managers as they sift through hundreds of resumes.
1. Keep it interesting
Don’t use the same word over and over on your resume. Keep recruiters engaged and switch it up! Make friends with an online thesaurus if you run out of synonyms for common phrases. A customer is not just a customer: He’s also a client, patron or stakeholder.
2. Include continuing education
Let recruiters know that you are committed to developing your knowledge and skills. Do this by creating a stand-alone section on your resume for Professional Development. Place this section immediately before the Education section. In this section, list any courses, seminars or workshops you’ve completed that relate to the job. Give a short title for the class and provide the date beside it. Then, give a short description about what was covered in the class.
3. Leave your home address off
Have you been including your home address in the contact information field of your resume? There’s no need to include this information. For one, including your home address puts you at risk of identity theft. It’s an all-around safer approach to just leave that info off. Secondly, if you’re looking to relocate, a long-distance address might make recruiters skip over your application. Rather than providing your home address, include a current phone number and an email address that you regularly access (not a work email).
4. Check out industry-specific templates
The specific industry you are applying to will often clue you into the exact level of formality needed for your resume. Different industries have their own sets of standards. That’s why it helps to do a cursory check on resume templates to see what others in your field are submitting.
In addition, different positions within an industry may allow for more creative expression. For instance, accounting and finance generally follow more traditional resume guidelines and abide by the one-page rule for the most part. However, a graphic designer or other creative position within one of these fields may be able to show off their skills by submitting an unconventional resume.
5. Nix “references available upon request”
Every square inch of your resume is important. Don’t waste space with redundancies like telling the employer to request references. They already know that. What’s more, in many cases, you will already have provided references in the actual job application, so including a statement about references is unnecessary. If recruiters want references, they’ll ask for them.
